One Million Miles From The Ground

Often times we find something we weren't looking for in the first place. It could be car keys, money, maybe that missing left sock the dryer stole. Sleuthing for samples is similar to those situations. You might hear something and get an idea of the song or artist, but can't place a finger on who it is.

I wasn't really looking for the sample, just chilling and Dexter Wansel's "One Million Miles From The Ground" shuffled thru my speakers. Clear Soul Forces' 2010 joint "One Million Miles From The Ground" sampled the Life on Mars cut and is a forecast of their ascension, as they've started to slowly make their way up the ladder some three years later.

Check it out...

Vou Lutar

I've posted before about my discovery of foreign music. More times than not, I'm not sure what's being said, but music remains one of the true universal languages.

The majority of Brazilian music I've gotten into has been because of the homie Shad B. So when he put me onto a dope Brazilian group a few weeks back, I had to let him drop a post.

Check it out after the jump.

Serve This Royalty

"If it don't touch my soul then I can't listen to it..."
- Big K.R.I.T. on "The Vent"

That quote from his 2011 track sums up my "qualifications" when I hear a song. If it evokes some type of emotion, then I can vibe with it. Whether, it forces me to make the ugly face or sit silently and think, it has to touch my soul in some way.

"Serve This Royalty" from his new mixtape, King Remembered In Time, heavily samples a song by the same title by Cody Chesnutt. Both are soulful numbers that leave you listening intetly to the lyrics and message. If Chesnutt's song piqued your interest, he made a return a few months ago with his new album Landing On A Hundred, which is well worth the $10.

Live Wires Connect

UGK ft. Keith Murray and Lord Jamar - Live Wires Connect

What happened to movie soundtracks?

In the 90's they often featured collaborations by artists they wouldn't happen because of scheduling conflicts and label politics among a host of of other factors. For some movies, the accompanying soundtrack was a branch to the plot, time period, and characters.

If you've seen the Wayans' 1996 hood movie parody, Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood, you've probably heard UGK's "Live Wires Connect" in the opening scene of the movie. It's one of those soundtrack gems that often gets overlooked when observing the breadth of UGK's catalog. This song was also significant because their collaboration with Lord Jamar and Keith Murray was one of their earliest with New York artists.

Back to the archives: I also talked about the disappearance of movie soundtracks in an episode of Product of My Opinion Radio in 2011.

U Send Me Swingin'

When Stalley hooked up with Block Beattaz for his Savage Journey mixtape last April, I had my doubts. Why would he move away from the chemistry he had with Rashad on LWN? Did the MMG affiliation change him for the worst? Those questions and others were erased when he debuted a quicker flow and an edginess I hadn't heard from him.

Stalley enlisted the Alabama production duo again for the lead single "Swangin" from his forthcoming debut album. The song features Houston OG Scarface and the bass heavy backdrop and hook borrows elements from Mint Condition's 1993 R&B jam "U Send Me Swingin." It's time to see if Stalley can replicate the success from his previous projects.
